The Project Management Institute (PMI) has devoted significant time and resources in the area of talent management and specifically as it pertains to the field of project management. This effort has led to the publication of three “Thought Leadership” reports on the topic that will be of interest to executives, managers, and others who are responsible for recruiting, retaining, and developing project managers at all levels in the organization. Of course, it will be of great interest to all practicing and prospective project managers as well.
Each report has a different focus, and taken together, present an interesting perspective on the state of talent management in our growing field.
In Rally The Talent to Win: Transforming Strategy into Reality, a report that was produced by The Economist Intelligence Unit and sponsored by PMI, only 17% of respondents reported that their “talent management strategies are quick to react to changing business conditions” which greatly hamper 40% of strategy implementation efforts. See below to download.
The second report, Spotlight on Success: Developing the Talent for Strategic Impact, Human Systems International (which was recently acquired by PMI) and PMI take an in-depth look at the talent management practices of 12 high-performing organizations which can be used as exemplars for other organizations looking to improve. See below to download.
PMI’s third report in the series, Talent Management: Powering Strategic Initiatives in the PMO, “identifies and explores the characteristics of organizations that excel at talent management.” However, based on a survey of 726 respondents “few organizations are adept at managing it, starting at the top.” The report, a collaboration with PriceWaterhouseCoopers, also suggests that by focusing on the six proven predictors of highly of highly mature organizations in managing talent, any organization will be able to significantly boost its own performance in this critical area.
